Planning the Trip: Half the Journey

I have always believed that planning a trip is half the journey.

Long before you board the plane, your vacation has already begun. With endless travel blogs, YouTube videos, Instagram photos, and recommendations from friends, you start building the experience in your mind. You picture yourself standing on a mountain peak, walking through a small village, or sitting by a lake with a cup of coffee. Before you know it, you are counting down the days until departure.

That is exactly how our Switzerland adventure started.

My husband had wanted to visit Switzerland for years. The mountains, the hiking trails, the scenery—it was high on his list. This year, we finally decided to make it happen.

We worked with a travel-agent friend through Railbookers to plan an eight-day Switzerland-by-rail journey. There are definite advantages to using a travel agent. Hotels, train connections, and logistics are organized for you. When traveling through multiple cities and countries, that structure can save a lot of stress.

At the same time, we are not exactly "follow-the-itinerary" travelers.

Over the years, we have become accustomed to booking our own flights, changing plans on the fly, and staying an extra day somewhere simply because we liked it. Sometimes it is difficult to commit to a fixed schedule months in advance.

But there is also something reassuring about having a plan. It keeps you on track and helps avoid surprises when moving from place to place.

Of course, once the planning started, the original itinerary did not stay original for very long.

I had always wanted to see Lake Como. Every picture seemed more beautiful than the last. Since we were already traveling to the region, it felt like the perfect opportunity.

Then the internet convinced us that if we were visiting Lake Como, we absolutely needed to see Lake Maggiore as well.

The internet was right.

So we added a stop in Stresa, a charming town on the shores of Lake Maggiore that looked like it belonged in a painting.

At that point, our eight-day Switzerland trip was already growing.

Then another thought crossed my mind. Since our flight home would depart from Zurich, why not explore a few more places?

I had never visited Liechtenstein, one of Europe's smallest countries. How often do you get the chance to add a new country to your travel map? Two days in Vaduz quickly found their way onto the itinerary.

And while we were at it, we added a couple of days in Zurich as well. After all, rushing through a city is rarely the best way to experience it.

Suddenly, our carefully planned eight-day Swiss vacation had evolved into a much larger adventure that included Italy, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.

Not bad for what started as a simple hiking trip.

The funny thing about travel planning is that every destination opens the door to another possibility. One recommendation leads to another. One beautiful photo becomes ten. One city turns into three.

Before long, the journey begins long before the suitcase is packed.

And honestly, that may be one of the best parts of traveling.

How an 8-Day Swiss Vacation Turned Into a European Adventure

For years, I wanted to write a travel blog.

Maybe it was because travel has always been more than a vacation for me. It is how I learn, recharge, and collect stories. Over the years, I traveled with my husband and family across the United States, explored parts of Europe, and visited several countries in Asia. Every trip left me with memories, lessons, and moments I wished I had written down.

So here I am, finally starting.

This story begins with Switzerland.

My husband had been talking about Switzerland for years. Mountains. Hiking trails. Crystal-clear lakes. Alpine villages. Trains winding through valleys that look like they belong on a postcard.

And honestly, he was right.

Back in March, I finally decided it was time to stop talking about the trip and start planning it. With the help of a travel-agent friend and Railbookers, we booked an eight-day journey through Switzerland's lakes and mountains.

Simple enough.

Or at least that was the original plan.

Since I am semi-retired these days and no longer tied to a rigid work schedule, we started asking ourselves a dangerous question:

"If we're already flying all the way to Europe, why not stay a little longer?"

That innocent question changed everything.

Soon, Lake Como found its way onto the itinerary. Then Lake Maggiore. Then a few extra days around Lake Geneva because everyone kept telling us how beautiful it was.

One addition led to another.

Before long, what started as an eight-day Swiss adventure began transforming into something much bigger.

But wait...

I am getting ahead of myself.

Part of the fun of travel is discovering the unexpected moments—the places you never planned to visit, the train rides that take your breath away, the conversations with strangers, and the views that somehow look even better than the pictures.

So I won't reveal all the surprises just yet.

Over the next few posts, I'll share how this trip came together, the lessons we learned while planning it, the destinations that exceeded expectations, and a few moments that reminded me why travel remains one of life's greatest gifts.

For now, let's just say this:

What began as a hiking trip to Switzerland became an unforgettable journey through some of the most beautiful lakes, mountains, and villages in Europe.

And the adventure was only beginning...
